A Glimpse of Grandeur: Passing Through San Juan National Forest on the Way to Mesa Verde
What began as just a drive through San Juan National Forest turned into an unforgettable preview of Colorado’s rugged beauty. Jagged granite peaks, vivid autumn color, reflective ponds, and the vibrant town of Durango left me eager to return.
When a Scenic Route Steals the Show
On my way to Mesa Verde National Park, I found myself passing through San Juan National Forest—a segment of the drive I hadn’t given much thought to. But what I experienced was far more than just a backdrop to my destination.
Autumn’s Palette on Full Display
The contrast of jagged granite cliffs, painted in earthy reds and oranges, stood boldly against groves of evergreen pine and bursts of golden aspens. Every turn felt like it unveiled a new scene, and the scattered still ponds mirrored the forest's color palette with clarity you rarely find.
The Unexpected Magic of Durango
After weaving through the forest, I reached Durango—a town that feels both charming and energized. It’s nestled so perfectly in the Rockies, you'd think it was sculpted into the land. Despite its size, it was buzzing with life—cafés full of people, bikes rolling past, and shops echoing with conversation.
Reflections That Stay With You
Though I didn’t stop for long, the experience stuck with me. The stillness of the ponds, the bold color contrasts in the terrain, and the inviting nature of Durango left no doubt in my mind—I need to return.
Already Planning a Return
Next time, it won’t be a pass-through. I’ll stay in Durango, explore the trails, photograph the lakes at sunrise, and truly take in everything San Juan National Forest has to offer. Sometimes the road to your destination turns out to be a destination in itself.
