Organ Pipe National Monument Park at Night: My Best Visit Yet
Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument is far from a major city, and you really feel that isolation when you're out on its dirt roads. I've been here numerous times. Sometimes it's just a quick stop to take a few photos, but most of the time I stay much longer. I like seeing how the desert changes throughout the year. Spring brings flowers to the cacti, summer brings the blazing heat, and winter can be surprisingly chilly. Each season has a different vibe, even when I'm driving the same roads and photographing places I've seen before.
Because of that distance, I usually try to leave before sunset. Eventually, I have to think about a hotel, food, and whatever entertainment I might want for the evening. I can easily spend hours out here, but I normally get back on the road while there's still daylight. I've only stayed at night once, and it ended up being my best visit.
The darkness feels sudden once the sun sets. The silence is deafening, but there's also this strange feeling that some animal is watching you from a distance. The same dirt roads I had taken during the day with ease suddenly felt like that peaceful calm before things go wrong in a horror movie. It was relaxing and a little unsettling at the same time, especially before my eyes adjusted.
Once I got used to the darkness and moonlight, it wasn't bad. The cacti stood out as silhouettes against the sky and gave me a different perspective of a place I had seen so many times before. I had spent plenty of time photographing the landscape during the day, but seeing it at night gave me something different to work with.
Saguaro silhouettes against the deep blue sky at Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument. The shapes of these cacti stood out even more as the rest of the desert faded into darkness.
Taking night photos is more time consuming than shooting during the day, but eventually I got into a rhythm that allowed me to shoot for hours. I wasn't thinking as much about how dark it was or when I needed to leave. I was focused on getting the next photo, which apparently meant I wasn't paying enough attention to where I was standing.
I was so in the zone that I slid about ten feet down an embankment on the side of the road. My arm was shredded, but the experience was definitely worth it. The slide wasn't the highlight, obviously, but it became part of a night I won't forget. After all the times I've been to Organ Pipe, that one visit is still my favorite.
I'll definitely have to go back at night. There's more I'd like to photograph, and I'd like to spend a few more hours enjoying that silence and seeing the cacti against the sky. Next time, I'll try to limit the cuts and bruises.
